Camp Design, Layout and Features 2017
Welcome to the 2017 camp planning page for SIDESHOW!
Physical Description:
SIDESHOW has gained an excellent reputation for a full visual, participatory and thematic experience, with extensive original art and brilliant night lighting. We aim for and continue to provide, a stunning visual appearance.
Our Frontage is expected to be 80 - 100 ft wide with a wonderful display of traditional sideshow banner art- all hand painted, lit up brilliantly at night along the entire length. The camp will start 8 -10 ft back from the street edge. Along the street we are planning to erect street lights strung from posts with a poles every 10 ft. BIke parking is accommodated along the frontage.
Within the frontage allowance will be Professor Tritones Corndog Calliope, and interactive art piece. The power source for this will tie in with the lights along the top of the bannerline. Two themed Mutant Vehicles adorn the frontage when parked at camp- the Phunhouse and the Train of Thought; and the Midway Games area prominently on the frontage.
in our build plan is the addition of bike racks to contain some of the traffic which will be placed within the 8-10 foot frontage we have left bare to accommodate the crowds
The main entrance opens up into a standing area in the center with the stage area to the right. There are benches for seating close to the magicians table. This combined space is 40 x 40
On the left side is the Odditorium within a 10 x 20 ft Costco tent that houses tables loaded with oddities and strange displays that we create and others that have been contributed from artists that like to add to our collection Various forms of art will hang from the walls with cloth backdrop
On the right front side of the stage area is an entrance into a 10 x 10 staging area for performers
On the right side of that is a 10 x 20 ft space for the Midway Games.
.
The fuel storage area that will store our gas containers and propane bottles will be in a 10 x 10 well ventilated space within half of a Costco tent located along the front of camp but inaccessible from the outside by our frontage barriers
The generators and solar panels for the lights and MV charging area will be at the back of the camp in the parking area in the bed of a truck or placed on the bed of an empty transport trailer
There is a 5ft covered exit at the back of the entertainment space to allow private access into camp. Our back camp area will accommodate our tent, vehicle and RV parking, camp kitchen, and portable shower- which includes a highly effective solar powered evap unit which has routinely eliminated our total grey water since introduction in 2013.
Otrher interior features include: a 15 ft dome-chillspace, a massage table, with a tented hammock, a shaded dining area approx 20 x 20 and a communal kitchen in a 10 x 20 Costco tent that will supply cooking utensils, some pots and pans, work surfaces, small grills, a cook top, cleaning supplies and recycling and garbage containers. The fuel used in this area will be propane.
In the far back right corner of the parking area will be the evaporation unit and our shower structure. The evap we build works very efficiently and can evaporate approx 75 gallons per day...our shower is set up on a trailer next to the evap with a drain that enters the pond that encloses it..our structure blew apart last year, so we are in the planning stages of creating a new one.. A heavy black plastic lined enclosure is put underneath the evap and shower to catch any spills onto the playa. The power to the evap is provided by a solar panel that sits next to the unit
Our parking area is at the very back of our camp and we take care to put anyone leaving the event early along an access point.as well as planning placement for those arriving mid week during the event. .This year the access point will be our fire lane.
We have two electric mutant vehicles that will gain access via the Fire Lane on the right side of camp. The generator for charging them is in the truck at the back of camp and properly secured.

Interactivity Description:
SIDESHOW... NEVER a theme camp in name only. Look through the doorway- it's all on the inside!
Since 2013, SIDESHOW has offered an array of highly interactive features. In 2017, we will be bringing these back and adding NEW opportunities for BRC citizens to actively engage. The daily scheduled BIG SHOW in the comfortably shaded Performance Parlor, features a dazzling collection of freaks, creatures, human oddities and top notch magicians sure to amaze, amuse and confound. We also bring the audience into the show by recruiting and inviting citizens to join shows with freaky talents, skills and abilities!
Every evening, our crack crew of magicians dazzle the crowds at or Midnight magic at 11 pm Shows, which routinely take on walk on magicians who can perform to warmed up audiences, often continuing near dawn.
At totally random times the Spin to Win a Corndog Game appears at the entrance! yOU COULD BE A REALLY BIG WIENER! The Corndog spin offers hungry burners a chance to win a scrumptious dog on a stick.
No real Sideshow would be complete without an Odditorium of Wonders! Filled with bizarre curiosities and amazing creations of nature and science, the Odditorium of Wonders offers 24/7 viewing of grotesqueries eager to shrivel the strongest of wills, and spur the pious to question the very nature of God! Colorful art adorns the walls to give pop and visual joy and the space is lit up at night to draw in the curious.
A new feature for 2017 are the MIDWAY GAMES- try your hand at challenges of skill, or pose for curiously awkward photo ops like Adam and Eve. Become the Tiny Comedian, or risk your self respect at the Ass Kissing Booth. Push a key on Professor Tritone's Corndog Calliope for musical amusement. There's more, much more!!
Our members are a mix of new Burners and Dust Hardened palaya vets. We have a wealth of knowledge to pass on to first timers, hopefully to instill in them the 10 Principles and an understanding of community involvement.
As an added lure we have a show that we will hold, once to twice mid week, that will offer a training course of scientific magic to take home and impress both the young and old in your family
Our entertainment space is always open to give relief from the sun or a quiet place to sit and chat with friends. Our magicians enjoy interacting with those that wander by between shows and will engage them in learning a few tricks or share with others tricks they have learned
