Burning Man 2015 Man Structure, "Bannerline Project"
I am very honored to have been asked to make a significant art contribution to Burning Man 2015. The Bannerline Project will result in 32 traditional hand painted sideshow banners, surrounding the main man structure, with some smaller banners located inside. This adds up to 2,250 square feet of hand painting. The painting on this project began in early May 2015 at The Generator Community Art and Builder's Space in Sparks Nevada. As of August 7, the banners have been packaged for transport! Below, I posted images of process and production throughout.
I wish to thank Reno Burners LLC for providing some essential funding for project start up, as well as Burning Man. This funding has acquired the fabric as well as wood for making the painting walls, and basic supplies. Lastly, the greatest thanks go to the Banner Minions- the volunteers to came out day after day to measure and cut fabric, prime, grommet and add base colors and more. Tracy Crossman, Sue Vaughn, Marguerite Crocus, Nila Northsun, and assistant finishing painter Dave Cherry; and John "Scooter" Marriner, who came from Oakland and helped me knock out a load of headline lettering.
This has been a dream project!

This project was underway at the Generator, a community art and builder space in Sparks NV. I maintain a studio space there. Although my studio can accommodate banner painting of the sizes need, more than one banner at a time was need to be in the works for this project. To meet that end, we constructed two portable painting walls. Each wall is two sided, 12 feet wide and 8 feet tall. Four banners could be worked on at the same time.
What are the steps to complete the project?
Step 1: Obtain vinyl for painting. Done.
Step 2: Construct painting walls. Done.
Step 3: Cut all banner sections to size, install grommets at the corners. Done.
Step 4: Hang and prime all banner sections and set aside for the next step. Done.
Step 5: Apply basic border, headline and background colors to all banners in a variety of types. These will serve as the blanks to which the characters will be applied. Done.
Step 6: I will sketch in the individual characters, headline lettering and features. Painting assistants will then help me block in basic colors. Done.
Step 6: Final detailing as needed. DONE!!!!!.
Step 7: All banners will be coated with a clear finish to protect the paint and make cleaning the banners after BM easier. Nix- determined unnecessary!
Step 8: Pack em up, take em out and put em up!
